The Ledges Overlook Trail is accessed from the west side of the dam. It is a moderate to steep climb. From a scenic overlook at the height of the loop, there are views of the West River, the reservoir, and the dam.
The West River Trail, accessed from the east side of the river, follows the east bank of the West River north to West Townshend.
The recreation area also includes picnic and play facilities, including picnic tables, grills, horseshoe pits, volleyball set-ups, grassy play areas, and two modern restrooms. Below the picnic area, a long, sandy beach is great for sunbathing, and the swimming area is shallow enough for children yet deep enough for those wanting to swim laps.
The recreation area is open the third Saturday in May through the Sunday after Labor Day in September, from 8 AM to 8 PM. Facilities are closed during the winter, but the trails remain open, with variable conditions.
There is currently only one restroom due to the July 2023 flooding
Shelters may be reserved for group use; reservations can be made online or by calling (877) 444-6777.
Pets are not allowed on the beach.
