The Lost Mine Trail is a moderately challenging two mile loop. Hiked counter-clockwise, the trail climbs from Reservoir Road up the hillside through several switchbacks to a viewpoint overlooking Mt. Ascutney. On this stretch of trail, which follows alongside a brook, a trail diverges to the left and connects to the Butternut Hill Trail. At the very end of the Lost Mine Loop, there is a short but steep and difficult section.
This is a popular trail for cross country skiing, hiking and snowshoeing, but you can still enjoy some solitude during the quieter times of the day. The trail is open year-round and beautiful to visit during any season. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed.
The trail features a historic abandoned mine that was in operation in the late 1800's and is one of only three known sources in the world of Chesterite, a silicate mineral with a unique crystal structure. Chesterite was mined in the early 1900's and uniquely identified in 1977.
