Description

This trail is a great walk/bike connector between the Old North End and the New North End via the Intervale's natural areas. Since 2019, a wood chip coated trail parallels Intervale Road, starting at the Intervale Center office, eliminating the need to use the pothole-ridden road until arriving at Tommy Thompson Community Garden. From the garden, use the gravel road to continue heading north through the gate (closed in winter to prohibit vehicle traffic) and pass a wetland pond and farm fields on either side. This section of the road is used as a trail and as a road for farm vehicles. At the junction on the edge of the field at McKenzie Park, take a left to continue on the gravel road. The road winds through a hedgerow of cottonwoods and maples before bordering a plowed field on the north side. Now a trail, take this section to where the tread is on the edge of the river bank with views across this wild stretch of the Winooski. Then meet the Ethan Allen Homestead property and trail system at the edge of the woods.

Other Information

  • Keep pets on a leash and out of farm fields and away from electric fences
  • No motorized vehicles north of gate on Intervale Road
  • Stay on Trail; road passes through private property

Trail Tips

Plan Ahead and Prepare
Make a Plan B before you head out the door. If the parking lot is full when you arrive at the trailhead, go to your second destination.

Trailhead Information

From downtown Burlington, take North Winooski Avenue north onto Riverside Avenue heading east. At traffic light, turn left onto Intervale Road. Continue 0.5 miles, crossing the train tracks and passing Gardener's Supply. You'll find a parking area on the left across from the Intervale Center office.

The trail may also be accessed from the north, near Ethan Allen Homestead. Take the Route 127 ramp "To Beaches" northbound ramp to Ethan Allen Homestead and find a small parking lot just to the right on the access road. Coming from North Avenue, head towards the ramp to VT 127 north, but take a left onto the Homestead access road before merging onto the highway. The trail is to the right of the parking lot.
