A variety of hiking trails let visitors explore historic quarries. Dogs should always be on leash because bears, deer, and other wildlife live in the area. Please note that these are HIKING ONLY trails; for mountain biking trails in the Owls Head Town Forest, please see the Owls Head Town Forest Multiuse Trails page.
Lower Prince Quarry Trail
The Lower Prince Quarry Loop Trail is 0.9 miles long, and loops around several old quarries. The Lower Prince Quarry was a special quarry with an actual roof and stove to keep workers “warm” in the winter. There are still deposits from the fire around the quarry, but the roof is long gone. This trail is great for families and smaller kids. It is HIKING ONLY.
Klondike Quarry Trail
The Klondike Quarry Trail was built by the summer crew in 2021. The trail goes through the historical quarry along a boardwalk that leads to a ladder and connects to the Yellow Trail and to Gettysburg Quarry. Explore the living history of Dorset! Dogs can walk around the ladder.
Gettysburg Quarry Trail
The Blue Trail to Gettysburg is a 0.5-mile trail. It is quite steep, so pace yourself on the way up. The trail goes past both Middle Prince and Klondike Quarries, so hiking the Blue Trail provides the opportunity to explore all the quarries. The trail is HIKING ONLY. It is closed April-May during mud season to help preserve the environment and protect the soil.
Gilbert Lookout Trail
This trail travels over Owls Head Mountain and passes a bonus vista before reaching to Gilbert Lookout. The route is blazed red with a moderate ascent to the top. It is an out-and-back trail, so you will need to hike back down on the same trail. In the winter the trail is challenging and an advanced hike, so use extra care if there is snow. Please note: The Gilbert Lookout trail has been RE-ROUTED as of 2021, due to erosion of the mountain and a danger for hikers. Please do not use the old route.
