From the Success Pond parking, the trail follows along a logging road, bearing right at a fork, to a large grassy area, the alternative parking lot for this hike. The trail leaves the clearing from its upper right corner along a footpath.
The trail ascends the west side of Mount Success along an old woods road. As it travels through regenerating forest, it crosses a small brook and climbs steeply along an eroded streambed.
Halfway up the Success Trail, a 0.3 mile loop path diverges to the south. This loop leads to The Outlook, ledges with spectacular views of the Presidential Range.
From the Outlook Loop intersection the Success Trail ascends to a ridge crest and passes through a wet area with bog bridging before rising steeply to the junction with the Mahoosuc Trail/AT, 2.4 miles from the trailhead. It is another 0.6 miles south along the Mahoosuc Trail/AT to the open summit of Mount Success (elevation 3,565).
