The Moat Mountain Bike Trails are a network of beginner to intermediate mountain bike trails and forest roads below the Moat Mountains in the White Mountain National Forest. Historically a popular site for mineral prospectors, this network of cross-country style mountain bike trails connects into nearby networks in Cathedral Ledge/Echo Lake State Park and the Marshall Conservation Area. A series of of Forest Roads connects many of the mountain bike trails and also offers easier riding terrain. The forest roads and mountain bike trails are open to walkers, runners, snowshoers and skiers as well, offering great multi-use opportunities.
Bike Trails:
Mineral Site Trail: The Mineral Site mountain bike trail is a 1.8 mile intermediate level route that begins from the Moat Mountain Mineral Site Trailhead. A few hundred yards beyond the trailhead, the northern end of the High School Loop intersects with the Mineral Site Trail. 0.6 miles further up the trail, the Tent Boulder diverges uphill to the left. Continue straight for the Mineral Site Trail, which soon turns sharply downhill into a series of sweeping switchbacks, descending to Forest Road 379 below.
Tent Boulder Trail: The 2.2 mile Tent Boulder trail is an advanced mountain bike trail accessed 0.7 miles up the Mineral Site Trail from the Mineral Site Trailhead. From the junction with the Mineral Site Trail, the Tent Boulder Trail climbs uphill to Tent Boulder, a giant glacial erratic feature in the woods. Beyond Tent Boulder, the trail continues down a series of technical switchbacks then along gently rolling downhill terrain to Forest Road 379.
Electric Loop: The Electric Loop is a 3.3 mile intermediate mountain bike loop off of Forest Road 379 that travels through beautiful hemlock forest. While the trail is almost entirely flat, the Electric Loop is full of exciting twists and turns with a few optional advanced riding features along the way.
Ultimate Singletrack: The Ultimate Singletrack loop is a 1.5 mile beginner singletrack trail located at the southern end of Forest Road 379A. Ultimate Singletrack is a flat trail that winds through a beautiful pine stand and connects to other nearby beginner singletrack trails.
Lower Stony Ridge Trail: The Lower Stony Ridge Trail can be accessed via the Moat Mineral Site Trailhead or from the southern end of Forest Road 379 off high Street. The Lower Stony Ridge Trail is a 1.0 mile intermediate singletrack that winds uphill from Forest Road 379 to the junction with the Stony Ridge Trail, connecting into the network of mountain bike trails in Cathedral Ledge State Park.
Upper Stony Ridge Trail: A 1.3-mile difficult singletrack trail to the outstanding views at White Horse Ledge. Use the intermediate climbing trail on the way up. This trail crosses hiking trails that connect to Echo Lake/Cathedral Ledge State Park.
High School Loop: From the top near the parking area on Forest Road 380, the 2 mile intermediate singletrack trail heads up and down a few short slopes before heading generally downhill. It then climbs back to Forest Road 379.
Railroad Bed: An easy and wide trail just under a mile long that climbs to an abandoned granite quarry. Use the connector to return to Forest Road 379.
