This wooded hike travels up through the trees and along VAST (Vermont Association of Snow Travelers) trails on the east side of the mountain, and returns down on ski trails.
Starting from the large deck behind the base lodge, head left (east) up Magic Carpet, the eastern-most ski trail. About 0.2 miles past the Eagles' Nest house on the left side of the trail, orange blazes lead into the woods.
The first section of the trail is tight single track that comes back onto the ski trail (~0.4 mi) near a water pump house. The trail cuts back into the woods about 100 feet further up the trail, and winds around the outside of the ski trails along a steep, wooded valley coming out at the top of the trail Vertigo (0.8 mi). Blazes lead along the side of Magic Carpet again then through a short glade before cutting off the ski trails and following the VAST network (1.2 mi) out to the east, and then back to the Magic Mountain summit (2.3 mi) where skinners can changeover and hikers can head downhill on any of the ski trails.
The suggested route down Magic Carpet to Wand offers beautiful views at Sunshine Corner, making for a loop of 3.75 mi total, with 1,520 feet of elevation gain.
Hikers can use the uphill trial for a beautiful hike May 15 -November 1. Disc golf is also available in the summer. In winter, Magic Mountain has an uphill ski policy for open access to the mountain when not running lifts (usually Monday-Wednesday non-holidays).
