Above Jackson Village, the twin peaks of Doublehead Mountain rise sharply overhead, looking out towards Mount Washington and the surrounding White Mountains stretching north and west. Doublehead Mountain is home to the historic Doublehead Ski Trail, a classic backcountry ski trail descending from North Doublehead (3,053') down to Dundee Road. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's, the historic Black Mountain Cabin atop North Doublehead has housed hikers and skiers for generations. The cabin is open year-round. Reservations are required and can be made here.
The hiking trails on Doublehead Mountain offer a short, steep, and highly scenic loop over North and South Doublehead. From the parking area on Dundee Road, head up the Doublehead Ski trail which in winter doubles as both a hiking and skiing trail. After 0.6 miles, the Ski trail continues left, while the Old Path continues straight sharply uphill. The Old Path climbs steeply uphill for 0.6 miles to the saddle between the North and South summits. From the saddle, continue left on the Old Path for the North Doublehead Summit, Doublehead Cabin, and the top of the Doublehead Ski Trail. Turn right at the saddle for the New Path to South Doublehead and the scenic outlook. From South Doublehead, the New Path continues steeply downhill 1.0 mile to Dundee Road, where hikers can walk back down the road 0.4 miles to the parking lot.
