Description

The Village Loop Trail varies by section.

The trail begins with a smooth and wide trail through the woods that empties into a large meadow east of Greenbush Road. Two branches to the right (north) off the main path offer alternatives through the woods, although as a more narrow and rugged walking path. Both join the meadow path described below.

The main Village Loop Trail continues as a mowed path across the meadow, crosses Greenbush Road immediately south of the Old Lantern Inn and Barn (where there is a second parking area), and climbs up Barber Hill along the southern fence line. The top of Barber Hill (at 384 feet) provides nice views of the Champlain Valley, the West Village area of Charlotte, and Pease and Mutton Mountains. The trail then descends back toward the Old Lantern Inn and Barn as a mowed path.

At the driveway for the Old Lantern Inn and Barn, the trail works its way north across the properties of several generous landowners (trail signs indicate the path; please respect landowners' privacy). The trail then re-enters a wooded area west of Greenbush Road and south of Ferry Road. This section can be rough in parts but will become wider and smoother as the Charlotte Trails Committee works to improve it. The Village Loop Trail terminates at Ferry Road about 0.17 miles south of the intersection of Ferry Road and Greenbush Road.

Other Information

The Charlotte Trails Committee asks that all users stay on the trails and off of private property bordering the trails, keep dogs from straying into neighboring yards, clean up after pets, and respect the privacy of the landowners who have generously allowed trail easements on their land.

The first parking area is found immediately off of US-7 in Charlotte, about 0.4 miles south of the intersection of US-7 and Ferry Road, at the town garage. It is on the west side of US-7 about 0.1 mile south of the "Charlotte Crossings" retail building. The trail head is at the south end of the town garage parking area.

The second parking area is located on the property of the Old Lantern Inn and Barn facility on the west side of Greenbush Road. Turn into the Old Lantern driveway, and the Village Loop Trail parking area is immediately to the left (south) and signed as such. The driveway for the Old Lantern Inn and Barn is 0.4 miles south of the intersection of Greenbush and Ferry Roads. Signs at the parking area point to the trail about 235 feet to the south.
