Description

This leisurely walk crosses a boardwalk and ascends westward gently in a loop through woods behind the Unitarian Universalist Church on Route 5. Park in the church parking lot and follow the wooden sign pointing to the Spirit in Nature Path, across the backyard. You’ll see a kiosk and blue tool shed at the trailhead. A boardwalk crosses over a fen with many wetland species. You’ll find a circle of benches for a small group to sit in a shady spur of the boardwalk. Turn right at the end of the boardwalk and follow orange and yellow square trail markers to the woodland loop. You can rest on a bench at the high point of the trail.

An extensive nature guide, trail maps, and guestbook are available seasonally at the trailhead kiosk. Inspirational quotes from literature and multiple faiths hang along the trail and many different plant species are labeled with wooden markers or keyed to the guide.

Watch out for exposed tree roots on the trail. Keep an eye out for minor patches of poison ivy. Biting insects can be numerous at times. Several wet area crossings located beyond the boardwalk are spanned with bog bridges -- if they're wet please watch your footing.

Trail Tips

Travel on Durable Surfaces
If your bike tires make an indent on the trail surface, it is too wet to ride. Come back when the trails have dried out.

Trailhead Information

Travel south on Route 5 from Norwich past the Subaru dealership and King Arthur Flour. The church is on the right-hand side of the road across from Fogg’s Hardware Store. The parking area is on the left hand side of the church.
