Description

This trail offers a number of different hike lengths, each of which offers beautiful views and unique experiences. The trail starts just north of Wheeler Pond (from the same trailhead location as the Wheeler Pond Trail). From there, hikers can climb the first 0.4 miles of moderate ascent to a scenic view from Moose Ledge of Wheeler Pond and the surrounding area. Hikers looking for a short trip can turn around here and head back.

From there the trail increases in steepness for the next 0.7 miles to the summit of Moose Mountain. From the summit, hikers can continue straight for the next 0.9 miles where the trail intersects with the Willoughby Lookout Spur, which gives hikers beautiful views of the surrounding lakes and mountains, or hikers can continue straight to connect to the Brookside Trail and the other Mount Hor trails in Willoughby State Forest.

Trail Tips

Dispose of Waste Properly
Dispose of solid human waste in a cathole 6-8 inches deep and at least 200 feet from water, camp, or trails. Don't forget to cover it up when you're done!

Trailhead Information

From Barton, drive south on VT-5/Lake Street for 4.5 miles. Turn left onto Wheeler Mountain Road and continue for 1.4 miles. Turn right off the road into the parking area where the trailhead is located.

The Moose Mountain Trail shares a trailhead with the Wheeler Pond Trail, so be sure to follow signs for Moose Mountain.

The parking areas are not plowed in the winter.
