The hiking trails at Maidstone State Park, one of Vermont's most remote state parks, explore the hardwood ridges and boreal forest along the shore of the lake.
The Moose Trail, a great trail to look for signs of wildlife, heads up the ridge above the lake and campgrounds. It goes through spruce-fir as well as hardwood forest and through a boulder field of glacial erratics.
The Loon Trail follows the rocky shoreline to the end of the lake and then makes a small loop. There is a beautiful view over the lake on the peninsula at the far end of the loop. Keep an eye out for loons and other wildlife in the cove.
The Shore Trail travels along the edge of the lake between the two campground areas through primarily hemlock and cedar forest.
There is a fee to use the park during the operating season, June 26th through Labor Day Weekend. Hiking trails are available only for campers when the campground is open.
People are welcome to use the trails during the off-season, but are asked to refrain from blocking any gates or access roads.
Please note that pets are not permitted in the day use area, on beaches or in designated swimming areas but are allowed in the campground, on trails and elsewhere throughout the park.
