The Downes Brook Trailhead serves as the primary access point for Hedgehog Mountain, Potash Mountain, and the Downes Brook Trail. The 4.5 mile UNH Trail loops over Hedgehog Mountain and its lower ledges which offer beautiful views of the Sandwich Range. From the trailhead, follow the UNH Trail left and continue 0.8 miles steadily uphill to the beginning of the loop trail over the summits. The 3.0 mile loop can be hiked in either direction. Heading left offers a longer and more gradual 2.2 mile summit approach via the lower ledges, Heading right from the junction offers a steeper and more direct 0.8 mile climb to the summit of Hedgehog Mountain (2,532').
