Black Cap Mountain: Blazed in red, this is a relatively easy hike that offers excellent views of the Presidential Range and is one of the most popular short hikes in the White Mountains. The trail begins on the Conway State Forest, crosses onto land owned by the Town of Conway, and finally reaches the boundary of the Green Hills Preserve before reaching the summit.
The Green Hills ridge is derived from Conway Granite, a volcanic bedrock formed approximately 200 million years ago. This bedrock is exposed in several places along the ridge, most notably on Middle Mountain, Peaked Mountain, and Black Cap, where visitors are exposed to excellent views as well as lessons in geology and ecology.
There are over 50 miles of trails in the Green Hills region, making it a favorite destination for hikers, mountain bikers, snowshoers, cross-country skiers, and snowmobilers. This extensive trail network is spread across conservation lands owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy, the Town of Conway, the State of NH, Tin Mountain Conservation Center and the Upper Saco Valley Land Trust. This Preserve is managed by The Nature Conservancy, and is an excellent place for walking, hunting, and observing wildlife. Camping, fires, and wheeled vehicles are not permitted on the preserve, and all dogs must be on a leash.
